Active Intelligence

Applied Active Inference

Intelligence that acts to resolve its own uncertainty.

An independent research group in Victoria, British Columbia, building autonomous systems that perceive, model, and decide in noisy, high-stakes physical environments — with the open sea as our proving ground.

Who we are

Theory that has to survive contact with the sea

We build systems that hold a model of their world, test it against every sensation, and act to resolve their own uncertainty. The group is independent and interdisciplinary — computer graphics, theoretical computer science, philosophy of cognitive science, marine engineering — convened by Wiser Marine Technologies Ltd. Our proving ground is SV Endurance, an instrumented, off-grid, solar-electric sailing vessel in the Salish Sea.

Profundi fuses eight unreliable marine data sources into one continuous seafloor model with per-point confidence — and says unknown where the evidence runs out.

The vessel awareness model tracks a sailing vessel’s attitude, position, and motion live at 50 Hz, calibrated from 3.96 million real at-sea samples.

DEPARTARRIVE
18.7 nm · 442 GNSS fixes · Strait of Georgia · Salish SeaOne logged passage from SV Endurance’s continuous at-sea logging — the raw material behind the vessel awareness model.

The supervisory agent has watched over the group’s own compute infrastructure unattended for months, leaving logged decision records for every disposition.
